Drink it Now or Drink it Later? THAT is the question!

By |September 8th, 2016|wine|

Aging Wine: Do You Drink it Now or Drink it Later – That is the Question! The typical Wine Shack customer is looking to purchase a wine they can drink in a few hours or over the next few days. Years ago, I heard that something like 50% of wine is consumed within 48 hours of purchase. […]

Getting The Most Out Of Your Tasting Room Experience

By |September 8th, 2014|wine|

As you probably know, we hold regular wine tastings upstairs in The Wine Shack’s Tasting Room. Our Tasting Room is a pretty casual place and we want you to enjoy yourself and sample the wines we’re pouring. With that said, there are things you can do to enhance your (and others) experience. Here are some simple “Do’s and Don’ts for the Tasting Room. […]

More Puffins Than Ever At The Wine Shack!

By |September 8th, 2014|wine|

If you thought Puffins only reside at Haystack Rock, then you’ve been missing out on Cannon Beach’s OTHER famous Puffins, Puffin Brand Wine.    Since the original vintage in 2005, Puffin Brand Wine has been available at The Wine Shack.  Dean Reiman, former owner of The Wine Shack, was interested in creating a unique brand of wine that would be both delicious and representative of Cannon Beach.  He is also responsible for the great artwork on the label.  One of the best things about acquiring The Wine Shack last year, is that the purchase also included Puffin Brand Wine! Since its debut, the Puffin Brand Wine family has expanded twice.   In 2006, a Red Blend was added to the Puffin lineup, and just this month we added a Pinot Gris.  Each of these wines represent the very finest of Oregon winemaking and are consistently The Wine Shack’s best sellers! Northwest Wineries Make the Trek to Cannon Beach

By |September 8th, 2014|Uncategorized, wine|

The Wine Shack’s Sumer Winery Series is now in full swing.   This summer, The Wine Shack’s Tasting Room will be the home for a local winery on Saturday afternoons, from 1-5pm, until the end of September. For those of you who love Oregon wine, it’s always exciting to talk to the winery staff or to meet the person responsible for your favorite wine.   We are honored to have a representative (often the Winemaker) visit the Wine Shack and pour four of their wines for you to taste and purchase.   You may not realize it, but the Winemaker loves it when customers start asking questions about their wines, vineyards or their winemaking processes.    This gives them an opportunity to explain what makes their winery different from other Oregon wineries.    You may find they farm organically, use natural yeasts or they only use fruit from vineyards they own.    Whatever the case, this is your chance to meet the Winemaker or winery staff member, talk to them about their wines and build a relationship with them. […]

My New Year’s Wine Resolutions

By |September 8th, 2014|Uncategorized, wine|

So, how are you doing on your new resolutions?    Personally, I haven’t flossed my teeth, jogged or ridden my bike every day, as I had so confidently resolved to do.   With those health and hygiene-related resolutions already out the window, I’ve made several“Wine Resolutions.”  I believe I have a much higher probability of achieving these! Wine Resolution #1- Drink More Wine From Small Oregon Wineries.    Small wineries need love too!   Everybody knows and loves the big wineries, such as King Estate and A to Z, myself included.  To broaden my horizons (and potentially yours as well) I resolve to look for excellent wine from smaller, lesser-known wineries.   Here’s my plan for accomplishing this.   […]

Great Wines for Spring

By |September 8th, 2014|Uncategorized, wine|

It’s official, spring is here. The days are longer, warmer and drier, and if you’re like me, the grill is getting a workout. One of my favorite things about spring is that I transition to a whole new group of wines. While winter is the perfect season for big red wines, as the calendar turns to spring, it’s time to add some variety into the wine selection. As you know, I enjoy a nice crisp, chilled white wine. Perfect for seafood, shellfish, salads and cheese plates, whites also pair nicely with ham and pork loin. Some of my favorite Oregon white wines for spring are Abacela Albarino ($20), with its aromas and flavors of apple, pear and citrus. A relatively unknown varietal, which originally came from Spain, Albarino beautifully combines a soft texture with a mineral that makes it perfect for spring. […]

How To Swirl, Sniff And Sip Like A Pro

By |September 8th, 2014|Uncategorized, wine|

One of my favorite things to do is to participate in a wine tasting! Wine tasting is an opportunity to taste a number of wines, for a relatively small fee. This gives you the ability to “try it before you buy it,” and who doesn’t like that? I try to attend wine tastings whenever and wherever I can, because I’m always looking for a new favorite. Wine tasting doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated. Typically, at a wine tasting, you will receive about a one-ounce pour. Hopefully, it will be in a high-quality wine glass (Reidel are my favorites) and the type appropriate for the varietal. […]

Summer Food & Wine Pairings

By |September 8th, 2014|Uncategorized, wine|

Great Wines for Summer Foods Summer is here and who doesn’t love going to a picnic, barbecue or bonfire on the beach?  Each of these is a great time to share a bottle of wine with friends or family.     I love it when a customer comes in to the Wine Shack and asks me to recommend a wine for their event.    This gives me an opportunity to suggest a couple of wines that I feel would complement their meal or party.    I’m going to give you a couple of my wine suggestions. Caesar Salad- This is one of the toughest summer foods to pair with wine.    A Caesar Salad combines flavors of anchovies, parmesan cheese and a creamy sauce.    My best recommendation would be Abacela Grenache Rose’  ($17).    This Rose’ has flavors of strawberry and cherry, with a slight acidity that will clean out your mouth between your anchovy flavored bites.    Another wine to consider is Chehalem INOX Chardonnay ($23).    While many of you are in the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) Club, Chehalem INOX is bright and crisp, with nice citrus fruit flavors, because it’s been fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, not oak. […]
